Well, my TF2 is broken. I cant get the game to run for more then 10 minutes without it crashing with the "hl2.exe has closed" error showing up. I think this is all because my power did go out the other day, when i turned my computer back on I got some sort of warning that the over-clock settings on my processor wern't reading correctly and I had to set them back to default or go to the BIOS to change them. I never changed them before, so I assumed they were at default before, so I selected that option.

Unfortunately I didn't realize it meant default settings from the FACTORY, not from Alienware who assembled and overclocked my computer upon being shipped, but now it has it at some stupid low clock speeds/memory speeds/voltages right now that I know are much lower then they were before. I know they are lower because I once looked at what everything was running at months ago, but I don't have a photographic memory unfortunately. I tried to see if there was some sort of default in the BIOS or maybe Alienware had made a profile in the Intel OC utility that came w/ my PC, but no such luck.

So now I was fiddling around with the settings trying to set them back to what they were just the other day. The one thing I do know was my processor was running at 3.2 ghz, because on the shipping list that I kept it says Intel i7 920 overclocked (3.2ghz). But I do not know what the memory timings/voltages/everything else was set at.

Probably wouldn't work cause I think its purely software related, but do you think good ol' System Restore would even revert changes that were made to the card/BIOS like that?

edit: I know the game will probably run fine if I just run my processor at 2.7 ghz instead of 3.2, but that will be quite a difference in performance especially in a processor intensive game like TF2 I'm sure. Yes I realize this isn't the hardware thread but I figure more people read this thread.

I'm not sure about the whole clocking thing, but I've heard lately because of the changes to the steam cloud, before when you close tf2 it would sync, and now when you close steam it syncs. So if your computer crashed with steam open it might have messed something up with the cloud. Maybe try disabling it for tf2 and see what happens.

thanks bone. I'll definitely try it out. Steam was definitely running when the power went out.

Yeah I have my steam cloud disabled, and when I reinstalled steam to fix a problem I had with TF2, the cloud synced and erased my Duke Nukem Forever save. Its buggy and should be automatically disabled in my opinion.

I think you're forgetting you're on an i7 920. Even at the default settings it will still run the game great. Tweak it on an off day! Or call Alienware and ask them what their numbers were for it. I'm sure its in the system.

not to be an a** BUT DELL OWNS ALIENWARE NOW and dells customer sapport sucks hope they can help

my advise is if theres a auto over clock option in bios or MOBO just use that as long as you have good enough cooling..

and yes any i7 is overkill for TF2
