A couple weeks ago I got the Demo Glengary Bonnet. Which I'm pretty happy about. Its a pretty good hat and I enjoy playing demoman. I would have rather gotten a pyro or medic hat though.

Well, to paraphrase someone from Valve, I forgot who exactly, but they said that they don't care too much if people idle, just they didn't want people to idle using a third party program. I read that somewhere...I forgot.

Most likely the halos will disappear slowly. Some will still wear them, but I think overall players would prefer to wear a hat instead of a halo.

Well, Robin Walker said that the 3rd party app wasn't considered cheating but obviously they didn't like the fact that people idled. This was around when the idler app only had around 3000+ idlers. Once the idler app reached around 100k+ when Valve advertised the new hats they had a change of heart and removed all items acquired by the 3rd party app and label the idlers as cheaters.

so i had been oh so close to having enough medal to craft my medic hat i had been craving so badly. and i had never idled before and i was considering doing it....but then my conscience got the best of me and i decided no i'll just kinda float around some random servers for the rest of the night.

well what did valve do....about fifteen minutes into it they kindly psychically rewarded me with the soldiers stash. and the kicker is the next day when i went and looked in my loadout i had TWO soldiers stashes.

additionally i got the 1 or 2 random weapon drops i needed to make the metal to finally craft my medic hat.

so i go and do it praying i dont get that god damned OBGYN mirror and BAM isntead i get the super fly vintage tyrolian. i can roll with that.

so now rodger has become the classy medic. i got kinda tired of my protest of jambi and im waiting on being able to add an EX tag so until then i will be [a classy medic]

so i roll the dice and craft my random and what do i get....a stovepipe. so i had two stovepipes and two stashes. and i did what i think anyone else would do in that situation and crafted the two dupes together to make...

Wow, I strongly disagree with almost every assessment of hats you made back there. birgade helmet is my least favorite of the pyro hats, though, admittedly a good hat overall, also, texas slim dome is awesome.

On a hat related note, what needs to be done to unlock them for the classes? Once I get a toque, I want everyone to be wearing it.

you need to donate money to the server to unlock the !equip command which allows you to use any hat on any class.

Depends on what the engy achievements are. I can imagine some pretty annoying ones.

the secret to idling is to stay in spectator mode in one of the first screens so nothing is happening on your screen, just the server load screen.

No.. hats shoulda been achievements, hidden achievements so you would only get them by playing and nobody would know what the achievements are.. That way no bs dropsystem, no idling servers nothing.. the old achiev system with unknown hidden achievs.. by the time a single achiev was known it would not matter anyhow and people would get hats for the classes they PLAY.. But hey.. it is as it is..

yea making them bound to certain achievements would be so much better. or maybe, like, you get 1 random hat for your class if you have all of its achievements.

Yeah, completely agreeing with Crux on this. You were rolling absurdly well. We would idle for comparable amounts of time, and you would get at least five hats for every one I got.

1 item every 6 hours is unusual. Yes 2 hats in a 24 hour period was extremely good luck but that was a fluke and I know it. But idling, statistically, should produce one hat every 3-4 days and one non-hat item every 1.5 hours. and i know...random drop is random but still, bear with me for a week while I report my numbers

Yeah, i was on all day sunday and got only 6 items, but last night form 11:30-7:00am i got no items. So apparently valve wants you to play their game just long wnough to say, "were more awesome people still play our 5/6 year old game", but don't want you to play long enough in order to get hats.

It might take into account of the actions you make while idling, if your just sitting in spectate not doing anything then it assumes you're idling and wont give you anything but hey, what do i know.

So last night I started idling as a scout in the game at 2AM and when I checked at 12:30PM I had zero items. I left it on the same server and changed class to sniper and when I got off work and got home at 9:30PM I had 6 items....weird

Well sourceop has pretty much concluded that idling drop rates have been reduced and that exiting steam and reconnecting every few hours seems to help with consistent drop rates. Also, others are reporting that idling in maps that aren't achievement_idle substantially increase drop rates.

no, for 4 refined you get not the specific hat you want but a 25% chance on that hat (20% for spy and medic). mind you, you craft a class hat, so you're getting 1 of the 4 or 5 at random.

got 3 refined now and am wondering whether i should craft a random hat or wait for the 4th refined. right now i have hats for 4 of the 9 classes so the chances of getting a hat for a class that i dont have yet is slightly more than 50%. what a dilemma.
